Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro and full-back Gianluca Zambrotta have shown off their newly acquired FIFA World Cup™ Trophy to former teammate Gianluca Pessotto, hospital sources said on Tuesday.
The pair paid a visit to the Juventus team manager, who is being treated in a Turin hospital following a suicide attempt, after celebrating the Azzurri's victory at a huge party at Rome's Circus Maximus on Monday night.
"He smiled when he saw them come in and seemed particularly happy for their brief visit which lasted five or six minutes," said hospital chief Prof Pierpaolo Donaldo.

The world champions, Cannavaro, Zambrotta and Juventus player Ciro Ferrara arrived at the hospital to visit Gianluca... Cannavaro had a copy of the world cup with him and the players showed it to Pessotto but he could not touch hit due to hygienic reasons. According to the doctor Pessotto realized that some of his companions were missing and asked about Alex Del Piero. He was told that his companion would visit him. Donadio also said that due to the extraordinary situation the medical staff said to the other patients' relatives about Pessotto's visitors and they were very understanding. The reanimation ward staff was moved seeing the players with the cup and the doctor was moved too. "I like football and it was moving for me too as for all the people who work in the ward" he said.

Вот это мне нравится
To Italia, with apologies
"I was wrong, Italia. Wrong to doubt you, wrong to criticize you, wrong to think that you were overrated, overscandalized and overmatched."
"But I'd like to say to the Azzurri one more thing: Grazie. Thank you for showing us that soccer is not about how much individual talent you possess (see: Brazil), but about how the players interact."
"All the ugliness, the kicks when they were down, spurred them on. Their fans started to believe and they all took strength from everyone else's negativity, like Dark Side siths -- growing stronger from that which did not kill them."
"During the final, I literally gasped in awe of the Italian defense. It wasn't the catenaccio of old, but something more fluid, refined, selfless. At one point, I started laughing, like the first time I saw Michelangelo's staircase at San Lorenzo in Florence, because sometimes laughter is the only possible reaction to impossible beauty."
Ну а как о Каннаваро красиво не сказать?
"The indisputable leader was Cannavaro, the captain. He played as if Jupiter had possessed his body, particularly after his former Juventus teammate Pessotto's suicide attempt. He won everything on the ground, everything in the air. He was a gladiator, the perfect spiritual machine -- cold fusion, perpetual motion and a heart the size of Mount Etna.
Twenty years from now, when I think back to the '06 World Cup, I will remember the following image first: Cannavaro, standing at midfield during the penalties, his arms folded, his face as tight and hard as a statue of Aeneas. His stoicism held during the first four penalties. Then, when Grosso's kick won the trophy, Cannavaro exploded, with joy, with relief, with pride. And with a certain amount of "up yours" to all of us doubters." - Да, да, да, именно об этих кадрах я писала!
"And so, all I can say in the end is: Scusami Italia, e grazie mille."
